Qn: State the necessary conditions for growing maize? It thrives in the tropical as well as the warm temperature climates [ 18C – 30C]The crop is very sensitive to frost; where ripening and harvesting period should be sunny and dry.It requires an annual rainfall of 635mm –1145mm [In hotter area , amount has to be higher while in cooler area, amount has to be lower]In East Africa, maize grows with the annual rainfall of 300mm – 1800mm. Qn: What to consider on preparing farm, planting and caring wheat?A field should/ may be ploughed three times and harrowed so as to reduces weed growth, to produce fine soil and to enables rapid seed germination.Planting maize, is done at the beginning of the rainy season [unless it is grown under irrigation].On large scale farming, holes are dug by tractors-driven planters which drop a seed in each hole as a tractor moves along.Gunda W.C @ lushoto secondary school 2016
