Gunda W.C @ lushoto secondary school 2016LARGE SCALE AGRICULTUREIs a type of agriculture that carried out on large tracts of land for commercial purposes. The farmers aims at maximizing profit from the scale of the crops.Large scale arable agriculture is of two forms: Plantation agricultureExtensive mechanized grain cultivation

Gunda W.C @ lushoto secondary school 2016I. PLANTATION AGRICULTUREIs a cultivation of cash crops on large tracts of land. The farms are called plantations (Estates). It is a specialized form of commercial farming in which one crop is usually grown. The system of growing only one dominant crop is called MONOCULTURE.It is practiced in the tropical regions of Africa, Asia and South America. It was introduced to East Africa by the European Settlers.A wide variety of crops grown includes: Coffee, Tea, Sugar cane, Sisal, Wattle, Pineapples, Cacao, Oil palm, Coconuts, Mangoes, Rubber, Tobacco, Cotton, Jute and Hamp.

Gunda W.C @ lushoto secondary school 2016OTHER CHARACTERISTICS OF LARGE SCALE AGRICULTUREFarmers are owned by governments, co-operatives, large companies or wealthy individuals.Scientific management with modern and scientific methods are employed in crops production.Skilled and unskilled labour are hired.Mechanization is common during activities such as land preparation, planting, spraying and in some cases harvesting the crops.Wide uses of fertilizers to improve soil fertility and in turn increase production.Requires large capital for the initial set up and availability of money for recurrent expenditure.

Gunda W.C @ lushoto secondary school 2016EXTENSIVE MECHANIZED GRAIN CULTIVATIONIt involves the cultivation of crops on large tracts of land.Grains are the main crops grown in this types of large scale agriculture. It involves growing of grains (cereals) like wheat and maize; other crops are barley, rye and oats. Most farming activities are carried out using machinery. This type of farming has spread to the tropical countries where land is available.

Gunda W.C @ lushoto secondary school 2016CHARACTERISTICS OF EXTENSIVE MECHANIZED GRAIN CULTIVATIONOnly one grain crop is grown on a farm; this is called monoculture. The farming activities are highly mechanized; due to size of a farms. It is more efficient and economical to use machinery. Example uses of a combined harvesters. It is carried out on very large farms in temperate regions. Grain farms can be as big as 240 – 16000 hectares.
