The first frame of our opening sequence shows the setting and location of where the scene will take place. We decided to use this as the first shot of our opening sequence because it shows the location and it is shown to the audience dramatically. The audience sees this first and so remembers where the scene is set. The shot of the location, New York, is a black and white shot of the city skyline. Black and white shots are typical to the thriller genre as they connote good and evil.

In this shot, most of the screen is black with a small window showing a skyscraper, where the shot pans up from the ground. The name of the production company is next to it in a simple white font. The shot of the skyscraper is also in black and white, continuing the same themes as the previous frame. This title develops conventions of the thriller genre as the skyscraper makes the audience feel weak due to its size. Thriller films usually make the audience feel weaker as it builds tension and suspense..

The next shot of our opening sequence is of our main title. We decided that it would be best to have the title frame at this point because it shows which company “presents” the film with the previous shot. The theme of black and white shots with simple font is yet again carried on as well. The word “interline” means to transfer from one carrier to another through shipment. This was used because it is what the plot of the film is about, drug dealing. This develops conventions and forms of real media products because the title of the film is also the name of the company, with the name having hidden meanings, common to the thriller genre.

This frame zooms towards the back of the protagonist as only the back of his head and shoulders are shown. We decided to use this shot as it further develops conventions of real media products. This is because the audience is introduced to a new character but his face is not shown, creating a mysterious tone. Also, the character is still seen with a suit on and at a computer, suggesting he is a powerful character in the film. The mystery created by this shot is common in the thriller genre and that is why we used this shot in particular.

The scene then cross cuts to a different location where a similar shot is shown to the previous. This shot shows a hooded character running, where the audience can only see the back of his head along with his shoulders. The cross cutting as well as the similarity to the last shot creates a juxtaposition in the pace of both location. This creates a lot of tension for the audience. The fast paced editing in this shot is a common convention of real media products from the thriller genre.

This shot mirrors an earlier shot in our opening sequence with the window showing the other location, central park. This is to show the other location that is in the scene and further develop the plot. This title also has the name of the director at the side creating a common theme throughout this title sequence. This may challenge the conventions of real media products because existing thriller films may not use repetition, as they want to surprise the audience but we decided to keep the title sequence the same theme.

The next shot of our opening sequence is of the protagonist’s foot shaking. This suggests that he is nervous, making the audience feel nervous too. The close up angle of this shot shows the shoe, which are quite high end shoes. This suggests that he is wealthy to the audience. Also, his face is still not being shown, further creating suspense for the audience as they don’t know who this person is. This uses conventions of real media products because there are usually wealthy people in thriller films.

This frame is showing the foot of another character, which is replicating the previous shot of the protagonist’s foot shaking. As the foot comes into the shot and leaves it very fast, it suggests they are running quite fast, building tension for the audience. The difference in costume from the last shot, going from high end shoes to trainers shows a clear difference in characters, also suggesting different age groups to the audience. This also develops forms and conventions of real media products because the fast pace of the shot is a common conventions of the thriller genre.

In this shot, the younger protagonist is seen running, but the shot is unfocused on his face so the audience cannot make out his face clearly. The character is still not properly introduced but the audience still wants to follow where they go because they are running away from something. The character running and the fast pace are both typical to existing thriller films. Therefore, our product develops conventions of real media products.
