His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark, meets with U.S. Congressional Delegation1888PressRelease - On September 5, an eight member U. S. Congressional delegation met with the Coptic Pope at Saint Mark's Cathedral in Cairo Egypt to discuss the recent attacks in Egypt that targeted Coptic Christians.New York, NY - His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark and leader of the Coptic Orthodox Church, granted a rare meeting today with an eight member U. S. Congressional delegation at Saint Mark's Cathedral in Cairo Egypt. The bipartisan commission consisted of Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), Michele Bachmann (R-MN), Donna Edwards (D-MD), Steve King (R-IA), Steve Stockman (R-TX), Robert Pittenger (R-NC), Louie Gohmert (R-TX), and Lois Frankel (D-FL). His Holiness welcomed and thanked the delegation for their initiative in verifying the scope of recent events in Egypt that targeted Coptic Christians. These attacks were consistently unreported or grossly underreported by the Western media. On August 14, there were organized and calculated simultaneous attacks targeting Copts, their homes, businesses and churches throughout Egypt. This resulted in the loss of dozens of innocent lives, the complete annihilation of 43 churches and 207 Coptic entities as well as the eviction of over 1000 families, orphanages and establishments. Recognizing that these confrontations were orchestrated to incite secular conflict and to destabilize the national unity, His Holiness Pope Tawadros II again affirmed strong support for the Egyptian government, its army and principals of the Egyptian revolution which aim to build a civil, democratic society, in which all Egyptian citizens are protected by rule of law and enjoy freedom of religion. "The heavy price of freedom for all of Egypt was paid through Coptic blood; the sacrifice offered was the burning of our great churches," His Holiness stated.

The meeting concluded and the U.S. Commission requested to visit several of these churches and organizations to witness firsthand the destruction as part of their visit. His Holiness expressed gratitude for their strong commitment to democracy and fairness as well as support for all the people of Egypt.Requests for further information and inquiries should be directed to:Father Abraham AzmyOffice of His Holiness
