National Independence Day

National Independence Day is a public holiday in Poland celebrated every year on 11 November to commemorate the anniversary of Poland's resumption of independent statehood.

In 1918, after 123 years of partitions by Russia, Prussia and Austria, Poland regained its independence

Date chosen is the one on which Józef Piłsudski assumed control of Poland after the end of the First World War and the defeat of Prussia and Austria.

On 11 November 1918 the Poles, under Józef Piłsudski command, disarmed the Germans in Warsaw and other Polish towns.Józef Piłsudski was appointed Commander in Chief of Polish forces and was entrusted with creating a national government for the newly independent country.
