World Migratory Bird Day May 10 – 11, 2014Brought to you by Burns Bog Conservation Society
Hey Fred, where is Canada???You ask me every year Bob! Follow everyone North!!!Follow me I’m heading to the North Pole!
What Is WMBD?An annual awareness raising campaign that started in 2006Highlights the need to protect migratory birds and their habitatsPeople celebrate with bird festivals, education programs, and bird watching excursions
What is Migration?Migration is moving from one place to anotherA Flyway is simply a migratory path
What Are Migratory Birds?Birds that fly distances over 100s or 1000s of kilometers In search for ideal ecological habitats for feeding, breeding, and raising their youngSeasonal changes force them to fly to more favourable conditions
Migratory Birds Canada Goose Found in SE Alaska and on the coast of BCThreat: clear-cut logging of their habitatWestern SandpiperSpends winters along the coast from BC and WashingtonHabitat: shores, mudflats, grassy pools, and wet meadowsSandhill CraneThreatened During migration, non-related cranes come together to form "survival groups" which gather food together
Where do they go?Many different migration patternsRarely fly to destinations non-stop, frequently stopping to rest, feed, or sit out bad weatherMost fly from North to the South in the Winter
Pacific FlywayOne of many migration routes for birds from Alaska to Southern Argentina Imagine you are on a long road trip across the continent. You need to “fuel up” and “rest up” at restaurants to make it to your destination. Each restaurant only gives you enough food to make it to the next restaurant. The pacific flyway has many important stops like “restaurants” where they feed and restPacific FlywayVancouver
What would happen if all the restaurants on your journey closed down?
Pacific FlywayRAMSAR SITE includes bird stops (“restaurants”) in the Lower Mainland such as:Sturgeon BankBurns BogSouth Arm MarshesSerpentineBoundary Bay
Burns Bog is an important rest stop for Migratory BirdsSituated in Delta, BC3 000 acres (8 times the size of Stanley Park!),Largest undeveloped urban wildernessBurns bogVancouverRichmondDelta
What Is Burns Bog’s Role?Over 103 species of migratory birds have been spotted in Burns BogSandhill CraneWithout Burns Bog, this bird could become extinct
Another important stop: Robert’s PointThe Western Sandpipers come to refuel here on their way to the arctic!!!Important: clean up the shore by slurping up gooey biofilm (sea slime); a key energy drink for these migratory birdsThreat: A large ship port will be built which will break the migratory chain for these birds, putting the western sandpiper in danger!!!Oil Spill
Why Protect Them?Important to food chains and maintaining ecosystems. Birds and humans hold a spiritual connection to each other. First Nations associate birds with: freedom, unity, community, love, and peace
Threats To The BirdsHumans and their activities are the largest threat to birds today. Just to name a few:
